Other Writing Pieces

Freshman year, I wrote an essay about my experience with religion. My English teacher had given us an assignment which asked us to write an analysis of a cultural event we were apart of. So, I wrote about my time at a Passover seder with my friends and how this affected my understanding of and relationship with religion. This is one of the first pieces of writing that allowed me to figure out something new that I hadn't realized I thought put the words on the page. It helped me see the value in writing about events and people in the effort to form a deeper understanding of these things.

This year, my English 225 professor instructed us to research a topic in the arts that was of interest to us. I immediately knew what I wanted to write about-- film music. This was something that had always intrigued me, as it brings such power and emotion to movies. This was yet another instance in which my understanding deepened and increased when I put pencil to paper. In my English class, we discussed how this was an important aspect of research essays. Knowing what would come out in the end was not always the way the writing process went.

The last assignment I had in my English 225 class this year was to write an open letter about a topic of our choosing. Again, an idea immediately popped into my head as it had been on my mind pretty frequently during that time. I wanted to write a letter to my little sister who is going into college next year. I planned to write to her directly, and reach other seniors in high school with college coming their way as well. I wanted to tell her the five things that I thought were most important to remember during freshman year, and ended up truly realizing them along the way as I wrote the letter.
