About Me

My name is Melony Malkin and I live with my mom, dad, and sister in Connecticut. I was originally born in Chicago and plan on moving back there when I get out of school as I believe it to be the best city in the country. I am a junior at the University of Michigan with a major in Psychology and minors in Writing and Digital Studies. This hasn't always been the case. I had actually planned on majoring in Education and becoming a teacher since I was seven years old and played school with my sister in the basement of our house. I have always loved working with kids. I realized in college that what I loved most about working with kids was their personalities, ways of being, fascinating tendencies, and the reasons behind these entities. So, I switched to Psychology and I am loving it. I added a Minor in Writing at the end of my sophomore year and the story behind that begins like this...

Last year, my friend dragged me to a hot yoga class. After an hour of slipping on my mat and feeling like I was going to pass out, I swore I would NEVER come back again. And yet, the next week I was back in that yoga studio (this time with a towel and a bigger water bottle) ready to try again. This time, I noticed the sensations of strength, determination and mindfulness that yoga gives. After an hour that led me to form an appreciation for yoga and realize how life-changing it could be, I immediately wanted to do one thing-- write about it.

Over time, writing has grown from being an activity that was implemented into my life by teachers in school, to an activity that I naturally gravitate to in order to remember things, figure things out, and try to put experiences that are floating around in my heart and mind into words. I found myself immediately thinking about ways to convert experiences into words on a page. Experiences like yoga, changes in relationships, tragic events in society, memorable moments from school, and fascinating people all seemed like things that could be better understood on a page in my notebook, Microsoft Word document or even on a note in my phone.

This passion led me to apply to become a Minor in Writing. I thought about how my major in Psychology would give me a lot of scientific writing practice, and that was great. However, I also wanted to take classes that would give me a chance to explore and practice ways to write about events and people and phenomenons in life.
